After much discernment, we have decided not to have our first in-person Sing Me Home Festival this October.

As much as we are yearning for the original vision of a multi-day in-person experience, we are shifting our focus to planning and creating these moments in 2022.

We have been waiting as long as possible to make this decision, leaving the door open for a possible gathering while monitoring the evolving COVID threat in consultation with community members and other festival organizers. The safety of our attendees, performers, volunteers, and staff is of the highest importance to us. With October rapidly approaching this decision feels for the best in order to bring the depth of intentionality and creative spirit to our planning and preparation in order to ensure a safe and successful first in-person Sing Me Home Festival.

We continue to be grateful for all of the performers and viewers who helped create such an energized and inspiring experience during our 2020 online launch during the early days of the pandemic. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to honor and live into our Sing Me Home mission of: “An intergenerational cultural celebration emerging at the crossroads of music, social justice, and spirituality. Serving to restore and inspire the heart, mind, and soul.”

We will be celebrating this community and marking the second weekend of October as our envisioned festival weekend by releasing the first episode of the Sing Me Home Podcast on October 10, 2021, featuring festival co-coordinators Chris Good and Seth Hendricks. Tune in for musical performances, behind the scenes stories of the festival’s launch and mission, and exciting announcements on 2022 programming.

We had been just days away from announcing our inaugural in-person festival that was to be held in October 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck and the world shut down. We pivoted quickly and launched a five week online festival with hopes of honoring the dreams and intentions of our mission - An intergenerational cultural celebration emerging at the crossroads of music, social justice, and spirituality. Serving to restore and inspire the heart, mind, and soul.

We were overwhelmed and so deeply moved by the response as the Sing Me Home community grew.

In the midst of so much uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and grief in those early days of the pandemic, more than 40 musicians and speakers helped us discover new ways of being together, finding connection and joy, comfort and inspiration for the heavy times we all found ourselves in.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to our phenomenal team of volunteers, the many donors who supported our vision and allowed us to provide meaningful work for all of our artists, and to the wider community who have engaged our programming with open hearts.

We are excited to announce some new Sing Me Home programming tomorrow morning, Monday, April 5, as part of co-coordinator Seth Hendricks' livestream on our Facebook page that will wrap up our Monday Morning Meditations series. Join us at 9:30am ET.

Until then, enjoy this recap video of our 2020 programming.

As we stand in solidarity with all who are working for racial justice, we offer a sampling of words and music from some of our Sing Me Home musicians and speakers who are sharing courageously and poignantly in this time.

Abdul El-Sayed - "These protests are necessary—but they shouldn't be. If we believed #BlackLivesMatter in our society, we would have fundamentally reformed our systems to value Black lives a long time ago without the need for massive, nationwide protests."

Drew G. I. Hart - “For centuries white supremacy has been entangled into the formation of mainstream Christians. For centuries, white Christians have been complicit bystanders, if not active perpetrators in our racist systems that oppress, humiliate, and too often kill people made in the image of God. The whole church must intentionally make a break with these death-dealing cycles that vandalize the sacred name of Jesus. Christian discipleship must be explicitly antiracist, refusing to conform to these racist patterns.”

Holly T. Bird - “We are creating pockets of love where BIPOC relatives can feel safe and free of racism and oppression.”

Carrie Newcomer - “We are living in a time of uncertainty, navigating the grief of loss and a changing world. We are also living in a time of possiblity, before us is a clear opening and invitation, a moment when we might truly embrace becoming the beloved community. There is a spirit moving in the world and within the human heart. Have courage my friends, love is still the greatest power, and you are part of a gathered community that transcends the miles.”

The Steel Wheels - “As musicians, our most important job is listening. A band's energy comes from the ability of its members to respond to each other, incorporating new ideas in real time as they use their unique voices to compliment each other. But, over the years, we have attempted to take part in a much deeper kind of listening. We want to keep our eyes and ears open to all the grief, joy, oppression, and freedom that make up our human experience, and hopefully reflect it back to our audience with some amount of integrity. We sing songs that speak to this complexity, and most poignantly, explore the tension between tradition and progress. We have always sought to value what came before, but truly examine it and be willing to throw out the parts that are hurtful or no longer useful to us as a people... We are grateful to a movement and a generation that is causing us to re-examine how we talk about race and racial justice, and how we address the causes of systemic racism. We pledge to truly listen, and to support organizations that are doing the hard work of building community.”

“There’s nothing that can replace the connection, intimacy and energy of an in-person live music experience. I miss that so much, both as a performer and a music fan. But I have to admit that the magic of these live streams has surprised me, like I think it has for many. I’ve witnessed moments of poignant vulnerability, community connection, grace and solidarity, comfort and inspiration. I never could’ve imagined having so much of my community and live music experience through my device, yet these moments are undeniably real and powerful as we are all physically distant yet yearning for social connection.” -Chris Good, Sing Me Home festival founder/co-coordinator

Serving to restore and inspire the heart, mind, and soul.

The music you hear in the festival trailer video is Laurel Premo’s rendition of “Till the Warfare is Over” off of her album, “The Iron Trios.” As she released this song last Fall she shared, “When I first encountered the hymn at a Sacred Harp singing, the meaning of the original lyrics hit me hard. The few lyrics are a pledge to walk with gods’ children, to talk with them, and to pray on, until the warfare is over. “Till the Warfare is Over” is repeated over and over again.”

What a moment we are living in. Even as we are in this uncertain and challenging new reality we are finding ways to walk with each other, to talk with each other, to pray on. And we’re going to keep doing it over and over again. What was originally envisioned to be a celebratory gathering in October 2020 has radically transformed, evolved, and rooted down deep into what feels like a more resonant, spirit-filled space.

If there ever was a moment to Sing Me Home, THIS IS IT.

The Sing Me Home Festival is a partnership between the band, Friends with the Weather, and the Manchester Church of the Brethren. In the original proposal for the festival, the church community approved a modest amount of seed money to begin booking talent, launching pre-ticket sales, and pursuing additional sponsorship/grant funding as we headed towards our inaugural festival this October. These recent weeks have inspired us to completely reorient this timeline and create an experience unlike anything that we could’ve imagined just a couple weeks ago.

As we all do our part to adhere to public health recommendations to minimize the spread of this virus, we will sing from living room to living room, from kitchen to kitchen, bedroom to bedroom, front porch to back yard, from our home to your home. The mission remains the same. However, we will be using the bulk of that seed money to create an online cultural experience of music, art, conversation, meditation, video, education, inspiration. We will be presenting 30 minute showcases of musicians, storytellers, activists, educators, preachers, poets, filmmakers, artists, comedians, farmers, podcasters, who are all grounded in & living out our mission in each of their own ways. Many of these sessions will be live, cultivating an opportunity to engage in real time with the broader community. Many of these sessions will speak directly to how we weather this Coronavirus crisis. Our hope is that all of the programming over the coming weeks will affirm the poignancy of our interconnectedness and inspire a renewed commitment to living in right relationship with each other and the earth.

Thank you for supporting our efforts with your financial contribution. With your financial support we will:

1. Provide generous stipends to all of our online programming leadership. This is an incredibly difficult time for so many people including many artists, musicians, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses - yet we need their voices and services more than ever. Beyond the initial stipend, we will make sure viewers/listeners know other ways to engage and support the important work of our Sing Me Home presenters.

2. Continue to organize and prepare for the inaugural in-person Sing Me Home Festival. We invite you to save the date for October, 9-11, 2020. We will be monitoring the path of the virus closely, following public health recommendations, and prioritizing health and safety in all of our plans. If it works out to gather this Fall, what a wonderful, joyous moment that will be! If not, we will keep you posted as we plan and discern when that first in-person gathering will take place.

We know that times are tough for so many people. This success of this campaign will be largely due to folks like you sharing the word with your friends and family. Whether you're able to support financially or not, please share this campaign and the online programming with your community and find us on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter. We hope that this offering can serve as a source of comfort, healing, and hope as we seek new ways to be in community.

Thank you so much for your interest and support. Sending love and encouragement to you and yours.
